"At the last Big Group my Life Group, Livermore 8th grade boys, won the Big Group Games. We had to do different Christmas related challenges, like chugging a carton of eggnog, building a gingerbread house, and lots of other fun stuff. We won every one of those challenges. Our group broke the Dublin girls winning streak of the 2 previous Big Groups, which was another cool accomplishment. The Livermore 8th grade boys did a great job and are counting on being just as strong at the next big group."

An Aweful Life examines what it looks like to live a awe inspired life of worship based on an understanding of God’s mercy through Jesus Christ.

We were created to worship God and be in awe of who He is. If we are honest with ourselves, we must admit that our lives are an act of worship, however, too often that worship goes to celebrities, leaders in the church or ourselves instead of to the One who is truly worthy. When we look at who God is and the gift of His son Jesus, we should fall to our knees and be in awe that God, in his great mercy, desires to be in a relationship with us. This should cause us to respond by offering all that we are back to him as a living sacrifice, a life that is set apart from the world and acceptable to God. A life lived in awe of who God is.

An Aweful Life takes a look at the lives of individuals who have learned to live each moment in awe of God’s mercy. We will learn what day to day worship is, and seek out practical ways we can offer our bodies to God as a living sacrifice.

"There's nothing like the sweet taste of victory especially after the bitter taste of defeat. Last big group our lifegroup grazed our fingertips to triumph but it was snatched away. We decided then and there that that was a onetime only occurrence. This past big group we came back with a determination of a raging bull. Tragically, the majority of our group was at their scholastic honors night (we encourage success in all areas of life!) However, we overcame! If nothing else, our victory proved that courage, love, and loud voices can conquer any obstacle."

The most interesting man in the world is the Son of God who does what he says he is going to do, who is always with us, who understands us and who offers hope like no one else can.

Over the next four weeks in JHM we will learn some of the stories that were told about this man before He was even born, what happened through Him while He walked the earth and what His birth and life meant for all humanity for the rest of time. His story offers a hope that can only be found in him. Together we want to encounter this hope because only through him can we know God and experience life to the fullest.

Join us for the month of December as we work through the story of the most interesting man who has ever walked the earth.

James Week 2

Wow! What a crazy week! It was the first morning the new 6th graders joined the JHIGH, and it was a blast! I am definitely impressed with this new group of students and I am confident God is going to use them to do some great things in the JHM over the next few years.

As far as the message from this last weekend is concerned, we looked at James 1:5. We asked ourselves, how can we make wise choices in the everyday decisions we face. We looked at the connection between our character and our choices. More specifically, how our character determines our choices, and our choices reveal our character. We left the kids with three things they can do to help them make wise choices:

1. Seek wise counsel: Proverbs 1:5 "Let the wise listen and add to their learning,
and let the discerning get guidance"

2. Check your choices with the bible: 2 Tim 3:14-17 "But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, 15 and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God[a] may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."

3. Pray about it! Listen to God! John 10:27 "27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me."

As a parent ask your kids these questions:

1. What do you think are the most important choices you will make while your in junior high?
2. Who do you go for wise counsel?
3. How can we listen to God?

"The Book Of James" -- All summer long!

On Sunday, we started our summer series on the book of James. Each week we will be posting a recap of the message, and some discussion questions here on the blog. We hope that these can create an opportunity for fruitful discussion between you and your junior higher.

Last Sunday, Doug taught on James 1:1-3, and spoke on trials. He taught about how trials and the testing of our faith are guaranteed in our walk with God, and how He uses them to build our character. He stressed the importance of how our character and who we are becoming is more important than our comfort. While it may not always be fun to grow up and go through difficult times, it is necessary because God is growing us through them and leading us towards perseverance.

Discuss these questions as a family:

1. What does the word character mean to you? Why is it important?

2. Parents discuss a time that you went through a difficult trial growing up. How did it you’re your character?

3. What are some ways that we can prepare for the trials in our lives? (Reading God’s word, prayer, accountability etc...)

4. Read James 1:12. What does that verse mean to you?

Frog Blog

There is a frog in my backyard and he’s VERY loud. My wife noticed it first. One night as we were both falling asleep she said, “That frog has to be huge, for all that sound he’s making!” That first night, I figured it would be a one-time disturbance. I was wrong.

To be honest, I haven’t had much experience with frogs, nor given them much thought. I have never had an opinion about them for better or for worse. You could say I have always been pretty ambivalent when it comes to frogs. Not that I have anything against them, but I never really cared. But this particular frog is different; I can’t stop thinking about him.

Mainly, because he won’t let me. You see, it’s at that beautiful moment when the busyness of my day collides with the comfort of my pillow, that this frog likes to make sure that I know he is there. He sounds off every night, trumpeting out his throaty “ribbits” to remind me, it seems, that the two of us are on different schedules. When I want to sleep, he wants to sing, and his timing is uncanny. To put it simply, what started as a mild annoyance has grown into a deep hatred. This frog, has become the bane of my existent, my nemesis.

Last night, my irritation reached an all-time high. I HAD to find the frog and put an end to the sleepless nights once and for all. I began to formulate a plan. I thought about getting dressed, grabbing my jacket from the closet and a flashlight from the garage. I asked myself, “Are you ready to end this?” “Yes.”

“Do you want your life to be different, to be better? Yes.”

“Are you ready for things to be back to normal? Yes! From the very core of who I am, yes!”

Then I rolled over and went to sleep.

I woke up tired this morning and as I was drinking my coffee I couldn’t help but think about that frog and how, strangely enough, he reminds me of God. Well not really God, he’s not my nemesis. I was thinking more of my relationship with God. Too often, I respond to God the way I responded to the frog - with laziness and ambivalence. I hear God; I know he is there. He keeps interrupting me. He intrigues me until I want to look for him, to find him, to find rest. But my desire is rarely desperate and action rarely follows.

I believe Jesus when he said, “If you look for me you will find me. If you knock I will answer.”

How do we actively look for God? How do we move from desiring God to seeking him? Where has God been interrupting you?

Worshipping a Prodigal God - by Kevin Carey

PRODIGAL: prod-i-gal 1. recklessly extravagant 2. having spent everything
"Jesus is showing us [in the the story of the two sons] the God of Great Expenditure, who is nothing if not prodigal toward us, his children. God's reckless grace is our greatest hope, a life-changing experience," (Timothy Keller, The Prodigal God).

God is a prodigal God. He is a God that loves His Creation with "reckless grace," with spendthrift love. He has spent everything to be in a love relationship with us. And we are simply asked to come join the party, to love Him in response to Him first loving us.

If we knew that and lived that, our lives would constantly exhibit the freedom and abandon that I believe Adam and Eve lived with during their time in Eden before the Fall. What I'm talking about is a perfect relationship with God, a relationship unscathed by sin, the relationship that humanity was designed to experience when we were first created in the image of God - with none of the constant brokenness that reminds us that this life is messed up compared to what it once was.

If we are to worship this prodigal God, we have to first understand that "He first loved us" (1 John 4:19) and, because of that, we can love Him in return. Worshiping God is a response to what He has already done, what He is doing at the present moment, and what He will continue to do tomorrow, next week, next year, next decade, and on for an eternity. The Bible takes on a whole new meaning when we realize that it is the story of God working in the midst of humanity, showing us how God interacts with humanity and how humanity is to interact with Him.

If we recognize that, our lives can take on a totally different dimeanor, one where our choices and our lifestyles and our work habits and our arts and our sports and our churches and our Sunday servies are a reflection of God Himself, not merely a production created by human hands.

"So we are Christ's ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us," (2 Cor. 5:20, NLT) - as if to say, God wants us to show the world was He looks like and acts like.

Everything that God is about is meant to bring us into relationship with Him. A.W. Tozer puts it this way:

"The Bible is not an end in itself, but a means to bring men to an intimate and satisfying knowledge of God, that they may enter into Him, that they may delight in His Presence, may taste and know the inner sweetness of the very God Himself in the core and center of thier hearts," (The Pursuit of God).

I would hope that, when Sunday comes, we "may taste and know the inner sweetness of the very God Himself in the core and center of our hearts." More than that, I hope that we experience that no matter the day, no matter the time or the place.

God is accessible here and now, a truth made possible by the fact that Jesus took our brokenness with Him to the cross and absolved us of our sinfullness. As Charles Wesley says in his hymn "Arise My Soul Arise:"

"Arise, my soul, arise; shake off thy guilty fears;
The bleeding sacrifice in my behalf appears:
Before the throne my surety stands,
Before the throne my surety stands,
My name is written on His hands.
He ever lives above, for me to intercede;
His all redeeming love, His precious blood, to plead:
His blood atoned for all our race,
His blood atoned for all our race,
And sprinkles now the throne of grace.
Five bleeding wounds He bears; received on Calvary;
They pour effectual prayers; they strongly plead for me:
“Forgive him, O forgive,” they cry,
“Forgive him, O forgive,” they cry,
“Nor let that ransomed sinner die!”
The Father hears Him pray, His dear anointed One;
He cannot turn away, the presence of His Son;
His Spirit answers to the blood,
His Spirit answers to the blood,
And tells me I am born of God.
My God is reconciled; His pardoning voice I hear;
He owns me for His child; I can no longer fear:
With confidence I now draw nigh,
With confidence I now draw nigh,
And “Father, Abba, Father,” cry.

We can worship Him in this moment, because He is a prodigal God. It's not about our brokenness anymore. It's about His faithfullness and love for us and His grace towards us. That is a reckless God who is worth giving ourselves to today and for eternity.

Dublin Girls Life Group!

The Dublin girls Life Group had an awesome first semester… I can hardly believe how fast the months went by and it’s already time for break! I guess time really does fly when you’re having fun! The Dublin girls group is a group of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade girls who meet once a week on Wednesday nights to hang out, fellowship with each other and learn how to apply the Word to our everyday lives. Together we have learned about how David can teach us valuable lessons we can apply to our lives, how we need to be accountable with others and be there for others every day, many different ways we can worship and serve in our daily lives, and how to “rejoice always, pray continually, and give thanks always” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).

Some of the highlights in the Dublin group were the awesome conversations and growth we have all seen in the group, tons of fun games, pumpkin decorating, and a Thanksgiving feast! The girls decorated pumpkins with feathers, markers, flowers and sequins for Halloween and all brought a dish to share for the Thanksgiving feast the last week before break. Personally, one of the biggest highlights for me is seeing the girls have fun and grow in their walks with Christ. A couple of the girls have asked to teach when we come back from break and one girl wants to start a Christian group on her campus and teach there. These things are what make Life Groups so valuable. I can’t express how awesome it is to interact with these amazing girls each week and how blessed I am to be one of their leaders! ☺

We will be having a Christmas party on December 15th from 7-8:30 and there will be food, fun, and friends to share the time with. It should be an awesome night and we are all looking forward to it!

Went by so fast...

Wow, I can barely believe that Life Groups are already moving into their breaks. It seems like only a couple of weeks ago that we started our groups. 6th graders learning what this "Life Group" thing is, 7th graders finally not being the smallest of the group, and 8th graders preparing for their final year in Jr High.

It has been such a blessing to see their lives change before our eyes. The 8th grade girls Life Group this year has been focusing on Women of the Bible and how our lives, modern day, can and should be influenced by the incredible Women of the Bible. So far we have studied: Esther, Rahab, Mary and Martha, Ruth and others. It amazes me how much we can relate to these women and what kind of questions about our faith come from hearing these stories.

Another Highlight of Jr High:

If you feel like Sunday mornings are too big for you? If you don't do very well with waking up in time for Sunday service? If you haven't already checked out our Saturday night service, you should! Every Saturday during the main service we hold a Junior High service in U1, Ronnie and I have the privilege of leading this service. Every week I am amazed at how much fun we have. Since the group is smaller, about 30-40 Jr Highers, our leaders are able to make lasting connections every week. We play tons of different games, occasionally have worship, and teach from the Word.

Over the last couple weeks the JHIGH has been going through a series called, "How do I look?" The premise of the series is pretty simple, do our lives look like the life of Christ? Christ came to show us how to live, what to prioritize, and how to live out our relationship with God.

My prayer for you is that you would look for opportunities each week to live the life God has called you to. Being a Chrsitian is so much more than a good idea or a lifestyle, it's your life. Our goal is that the way we talk, the way we spend our money, the way we care for people, imitates and represents Christ.

Yo whatsup JR High! This is Doug here ( I am the guy in the flannel trying to protect Jay) to remind you guys that starting this Sunday February 21, 2010 we will be starting our new series ALL-IN! I’m so incredibly excited to see what God is going to do in all of our hearts through this series and I want to give you a little preview of what we will be talking about!

Throughout the series, we are going to be going through the Gospel of Mark. This Gospel is unique, because it focuses mainly on what Jesus did rather then what he said. It was written to a group of Christians who lived in Rome and were being persecuted for their faith in Jesus. Rome was similar to our culture today in America, because it was the most powerful and prominent place in the world. Christianity was seen as a threat to change the way things are and since the Romans were afraid of that they tried to persecute the Christians and eliminate the Church.

Like the people who originally received this Gospel, we are often persecuted for our faith, and we are constantly bombarded with the idea that people should live to please themselves as much as they possibly can and everything should always be about ME! Which is very contradictory to what the Bible says! So for the next few months we will be talking about going ALL-IN for Christ, and looking at how we as Christians should be giving every part of our lives to God so that way he can use them to bless other people!

Mark 8:34-35 “If anyone would come after me(Jesus), he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it.”

Hey everyone! :) it's me... JAMIE! Yes, you heard me... the real, the only JAMIE! Long time no talk my friends! Actually, this "long time" has flown by. I can't believe that I have less than 2 months left here at school and then I am home for winter break! WOOO HOOOO! I will be flying home (hopefully) December 15th and will be leaving back to Michigan January 11th... so mark your calendars!

So much has been going on here in Jackson. Recently, the colors of the trees have changed from a bright summer green, to a sweet sultry autumn yellow, orange and red. It was absolutely beautiful! And now, it's cold... dropped some many degrees... and soon the ground will no longer be covered in leaves but in snow... oh goodness. :) I try to stay "most active" my playing disc golf... it's about one of the funnest games I have played! I love it! God has provided me a job at Gap at the local mall in town... and let's just say I am getting used to it.. but God not only has provided me a job but a family (my parents) who have proudly supported me this semester. I am so very grateful.

Now, let me introduce you to my beautiful dorm:
Erika, Stephanie, Britni, Leah (my RA), me, and Roberta! We live in what is called the "bat cave" and we love it. I mean what 6 girls wouldn't like a double bathroom all to themselves? :)

My usual day consists of waking up... making my bed... doing my dorm detail (mop, sweep, vacuum), get ready for my day, breakfast, go to class for the next 4 hours, lunch, homework, dinner, homework, and maybe some kind of activity- sports, exercise, social, movie, ect. Latley, I have been in a COMPLETE crotchet frenzy and it's amazing!

God has been teaching me so much here. Let me begin with, I cannot keep God in a box. I had BIG plans for MY life... BIG ASPIRATIONS to accomplish... a narrow minded plan for myself. Well, is God totally fixing my mind to what His is and I have realized that I can't keep God in a box. He has ALL power and authority over my life. If I want to live in His will, I must keep Him out of the box and allow Him to control each step of my life through His Word. God gave me His Word so that I use it to guide my life and I intend on using it!

Another BIG thing God has taught me is how to resist temptation. One thing I have learned is that I won't always resist... there will be times where I fail and fall... but because of God's grace I am forgiven and there is NO guilt or burden I have to carry. Two ways to resist are: 1) knowing what He says. Looking to His Word for advice on the struggle or temptation. If I know that I have a hard time with __________ (struggle) than what does God say about this ________. I have come to find out that temptation comes from my OWN desires which entice me and drag me into sinful actions. It's NO one else's fault, it's my own. In the 3 times that God was tempted by Satan, He used scripture to rebuke Satan. 2) Communicating with God what the struggle is that you are being tempted in. God knows your struggles, He knows what's going on in your head and heart... so why try hiding it? If anything, why wouldn't we just be up front and real with Him? He needs to be our first resource for help. Prayer is how we communicate with God. Try it. :)

When slipping into temptation, it's more than just sinning against God... but when you sin against Him you are rejecting the Man who died for you because He knew that you would never be made holy or righteous on your own. Only by the cross have we been justified- made righteous before Him. Praise God... thank God for giving us the gift of grace. :)

This is just a piece of what I have been learning here at school. I have learned so much about God and His character... who I am and who He is. It's absolutley amazing! Just know I miss you all a lot. I am so blessed to have had the opportunity to know you as long as I have. I plan to be back... and to work with you all for a couple weeks in the winter... and then back again in the summer. It’s now officially time for the 2nd annual DEVO with Doug! It’s hard to believe but it’s probably going to be even better than the 1st one! (at least I hope) This Sunday was the first week of CHOCTOBER!!!! And I think I speak for everyone there, that it was RIDICULOUS! We had a bunch of crazy games including a chocolate milk chugging competition that Crespo DOMINATED! And a make your own chocolate milk game where students poured chocolate syrup and milk into a cup (and all over Ronnie and Destiny’s faces!) and then stirred up with a spoon that was in there toes! I’m actually still disgusted by the fact that I drank that and you guys put your feet into that milk! EWW I think I just threw up a little bit in my mouth! We watched a hilarious video by the skit guys and finally Heather taught about how God wants to chisel everything out of our lives that isn’t for Him.

This really got me thinking about how in Ephesians 2:10 it says “for we are God’s masterpiece”. That’s pretty cool huh? God created everything, he created the oceans, the forests, and every single beautiful thing in nature, and he calls us his masterpiece!! He calls jacked up people that are never “cool” enough, or “pretty” enough his masterpiece?!?! That is hard for me to wrap my mind around. One of God’s favorite things to do is create. Think about it, every single day he decides to create more people. He doesn’t have to, there are plenty of people on this planet. Doesn’t he ever get bored with that? I know I would! But no he keeps on creating because he is an artist, and what does every artist want out of their artwork? They want it to be a masterpiece. God wants to chisel every part of us that are sinful and every part of our lives that don’t honor him. We will always have sin in our life because we are humans, but God wants us to give all that up to him and let him transform us. The second part of that verse Ephesians 2:10 is “created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” What kind of good works is he calling you to do? What needs to be chiseled out of your life?

1st ever DEVO with Doug!

What up Jr High! I’m really excited because this is my first official Devo with Doug, which will be my weekly entry on the blog! I will be recapping all the craziness in the junior high service, and what God has been showing us through the teachings. Yesterday we played a game answering a bunch of random and quirky questions and Joe’s and the 7th grade boys won (even though they totally cheated). We also continued our “grow” series with an awesome guest speaker named Ryan, who talked about how pain brings growth. He used the image of a “diamond in the rough” to explain how through all the rough things in life there is a diamond that will come out of it. I don’t know about you guys but it seems like to me that a lot of people that I truly care about are going through a really rough time right now. There are so many things that are going on that are making me ask God, "Why are you letting this happen?"

Do you ever find yourself frustrated with God, and can’t figure out why there is so much pain in this world? I just want to let you guys know that this is totally healthy and normal!

I want to encourage you guys that none of the pain or problems in your life are in vain. There is a purpose for every single one of them. Romans 5:2-5 says “we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character and character hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.” God wants to teach you something through every difficult situation in your life, and he wants to develop you into Godly men and women who will grow in perseverance and in character. He wants to be that diamond in the rough, and wants to teach you something about himself or about yourself. The pain that I have been going through recently is seeing so many of my friends struggling really badly through life and realizing that I cannot be the one to bring them the comfort they need. What I believe God has been showing me is that it’s not my job to have all the answers and that I cannot comfort them the way they need to be comforted. Only HE can! All I can do is continue loving them and trying my hardest to be there for them.

So what is God trying to teach you? What does the Bible say about the problems you’re facing?

As a junior high staff, we love you guys more then you could ever imagine and we hope and pray that you guys feel comfortable coming to us to help you figure out these questions.

The Pleasanton Aqautic Center was a BLAST yesterday!
Let's start from the beginning...
It was hot! There was friends! And better yet... there was a 3 pools-
One HUGE pool to just swim in, another with a diving board, and the other with a HUGE slide!
It was absolutely awesome on a HOT summer day!

We are BACK!

We are back from camp and pretty excited to be home! Not because we didn't love camp... but because we have SO MUCH TO SHARE! I think of... where should we begin....? Let's start off with this-RECREATION was PHENOMENAL!It was absolutely CRAZY! Just think, I lost my voice the 2nd day...!
Then we had chapels... where we have Grayson lead some worship and Phil give us some amazing messages that really made us think about how are lives should be lived as believers- the salt and the light, sharing our faith and glorifying God with our lives. It was amazing. The students had two opportunities that week to give their life to the "Kingdom of God"... and so many students made that decision, to leave their old life behind in the "Kingdom of Self" and to be a part of the "Kingdom of God". It was an amazing and exciting week.
From the Blob to Noah's Nightmare... from the Ark to the pool.... from paintball to the high ropes course... from paddle boarding, row boating, and canoeing to swimming around and walking to the cove and from the messages that Phil delivered every night and the impactful thoughts in the hearts of us all... I think the staff and students could all conclude that it was an amazing and eventful week... a unique one at that. :)
After coming home from camp and can be tough... because often after spiritual highs the enemy attacks even harder. So please be praying that God would protect the students who made decisions this last week and nurture the Word that was planted in their hearts.

As the new Student Ministries Worship Leader, I wanted to write you all a little note telling you about myself. First, I’m so excited to serve the youth of Cornerstone full-time. I’ve been on staff at Cornerstone for more than two years, and I’ve been working primarily with young adults and with the weekend service teams. Now I get to devote my time entirely to Cornerstone youth, and I’m fired up about that.

I grew up as a professional actor and went to school at UCLA to pursue that dream. But, by the end of my freshman year, God had redirected my life. He wanted me to give myself to serving His Church. So I became really involved in the college group at Bel Air Presbyterian Church, and led worship there for my last two years of school. That church was a hub for Christians who were working in the Industry (60% or so of the congregation), so I got to spend a lot of time playing with and learning from producers, songwriters, artists, and musical directors who were making a living doing music.

When I graduated from UCLA in 2006 (with a degree in English), I moved back to the Bay Area. I found Cornerstone through a Google search and ended up getting involved in leadership at Fuel. One thing led to another, and within a couple months, I was leading worship for both Fuel and the newly-created Sanctuary. That part-time job turned to a full-time job in September of 2007, as I came on staff to assist Pastor Scott in the worship department and continue leading worship for the young adults. Since then, I’ve started two bands – a worship band called The Collective and a coffee house band called Under the Streetlight – and I’m falling deeper and deeper in love with Jesus, His Church, and with the people I get to meet and serve with at Cornerstone.

Again, I’m really excited to serve the youth of Cornerstone through worship. Cornerstone is an incredible place, and I am so thankful I get to work at a church where amazing things are happening through the powerful leading of the Holy Spirit.
I look forward to more amazing things to come as we follow Jesus together.

SUMMMMMMMMMMER CAMP!

Rube…? Who is Rube? That’s what we will be finding out this summer- June 21st through the 27th at Hume Lake Christian Camp! In Meadow Ranch, the JH camp, we will be involved in a week of worship, God’s Word, fierce competition, and relationships with other students and counselors!

Worship will be lead by Grayson Kess e ni ch, a northern California boy

Phil Payne will be our speaker. He is a missionary apart of the International Teams working and living in Quito, Ecuador and worked with Youth Ministry for 10 years before that in California!

He will be taking us through the idea that as (-->) Christians we are to be the “salt to the earth” and to show love to our neighbors. But here is the question to think about: Do you truly care about the people in the world? During this week, you will be pushed and challenged to take a look on how you care and love people around you and to reflect on if Jesus is seen in the way you live. So BE READY FOR a week of a challenging speaker and competitive team spirit!

Be at the church for CHECK-IN at 9am in front of the Event Center.

We will be LEAVING at 10am.

The advised amount of money to bring for activites is $30-$50 for the week.

Bring some snacks for the trip, it's a nice couple hours in a bus. :)

"Stand Out" week 2

Over the last few weeks we have been talking about how God has called us to live a life that "Stands Out." On Sunday Paul challenged us to stand out in the way we care for people we don't know and how if we are really following Christ we should be inclusive in the way we care for people. How have you been standing out? Are you reaching out to kids that you might not normally get along with? My prayer for you is that you would live your life boldly, taking risks to show people how amazing our God is.

On Sunday we started our new series “Stand Out,” where over the next 7 weeks we will look at the parables of Jesus, and how through the parables Jesus shows us how to live like him. Yesterday we looked at the Parable of the Talents and accepted the challenge to live the life God has given us in a way that is honoring to him. Ephesians 2:10 states, “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God in advance prepared us to do.” God created each of us uniquely with our own personality and set of gifts. We are called to use those unique gifts to love and care for each other while showing people the love of Christ. We challenged each other to focus specifically the next 7 weeks to live a life that stands out and gave each person who accepted the challenge a bracelet to help them remember their commitment. We also decided to give each Home Group a $100 to see how over the course of the series they can use that money and their gifts to further God’s kingdom. I am excited to see what God is going to do through this series.

Next week my good friend Paul Halvorsen will talk to us about Luke 18:9-14. Read it early so you can be ready on Sunday. Paul is great, you guys are going to love him.

6th Grade Guy's Home Group Lesson "Watch Your Step"

This week we started off the home group with a quick football game and then investigated how best to destroy our peeps to demonstrate how dangerous the rat traps are. After that we explored the role of trust and faith in a community of believers and how we can support each other in our temptations. We did a couple of trust exercises where the students had to trust others to avoid injury. Galatians 6:1-3 and Romans 14:12-13 are great places to study the principles found in the lesson.

Hey everybody! Here are some highlight's from our 6th grade guy's home group. If you aren't involved in a home group here's what you are missing out on. - Jay

Last week’s lesson was titled "Micro-Mess". We explored how things that happen to us can cause changes inside us. If we do not take these things to God they can cause us to explode: outward, in destructive behavior; or inward, in self-destructive behavior.

We microwaved raw eggs to graphically demonstrate what happens when things are held inside until they explode.

We taught on how a little bit of guidance and instruction, from God's Word can make a big impact on our effectiveness for Him. The boys assembled marshmallow rifles first without instruction, & later based on a proven design.

This summer will be an unforgettable summer of great laughs and memories as we talk through the idea that as Christians we are called to be the Salt of the Earth and to show love to our neighbors. This summer we will be asking "Do you really care about the people in the world?" So get ready as we push, challenge and stir something in you to get you to care about loving people around you and show them Jesus by the way you live!

Hey Everyone Monday February 9th we will be serving at Vineyard Christian Fellowship. We have been blessed with the opportuity to help host one of the Monday afternoon BBQ's. Hey Everyone,

Can you believe that Christmas is only 2 weeks away? It is amazing how fast the holiday season goes by. With that in mind, I want to remind you of the challenge I gave you on Sunday, to live this Christmas season in an intentional and God honoring way. This week we are going to continue our Christmas series, by looking at the sacrifice that Jesus made for us. Specifically we will be asking how that sacrifice should determine how we celebrate Christmas.

This is going to be a great time that you are not going to want to miss.

XMAS XTRAVAGANZA

Hey!

Our first annual Xmas Xtravaganza is only a couple of weeks away. We will be celebrating Christmas together as a junior high on December 19th from 7:00pm to 10:00pm in the event center. The cost of the event is $3 bucks, and includes a bunch of food and some awesome Christmas prizes. Make sure to register online, so that we can make sure to save you a spot.

Don't forget to bring a goofy, weird, or funny gift for the white elephant gift exchange. I will tell you more about white elephant gifts this Sunday! They are awesome!

December Service Project

What? We will be serving hot turkey meals to those who are less fortunate. Specifically to the elderly, and physically challenged that live in the district around City Impact.

When? December 13th - Meet at Cornerstone @ 8a.m. and we will be returning at 5p.m.

Where? San Francisco - We will be partnering with City Impact Ministry located at 230 Jones Street.

Why? To shower those less fortunate with love

Gratitude and Generosity

It is hard to believe that Thanksgiving is only a little over two weeks away! Personally I love Thanksgiving. I love everything about it. I love that I get to hang out with family and friends, I love that Thanksgiving goes hand in hand with football, and of course I love Thanksgiving dinner. Above all of that though, I love that we have a day set apart for us to be thankful for the things God has blessed us with. But here’s the thing with being thankful, being truly thankful should lead us to being generous. Let me say that again our gratitude should lead us to generosity. As a ministry we want to live out our gratitude through the way we are generous with what God has given us. One way that we have decided to do this is by providing 75 families with Thanksgiving dinner. In order to do this WE NEED YOUR HELP. We are asking you to donate what we need for each basket. We will be collecting the material on Sundays and Thursdays.

Here is what each basket needs:

1 Gift Certificate for a Turkey ($20 grocery gift card)
2 Canned Cranberry Sauce
2 Canned Green Beans
1 Box of Mashed Potatoes
1 Box of Stuffing
1 Package/Jar of Gravy Mix
2 Canned Yams
1 Boxed Dessert
2 Corn Muffin Mix
2 Sparkling Cider

Each basket costs between $40 and $50.

Pops and Jocks Annual Turkey Bowl

Alright Junior high guys and dads it is almost time for a new tradition in the Junior High ministry at Cornerstone, our annual father and son flag football game. This year's game will be held at Christensen Middle school Saturday November 15th from 10am-1pm. Kids if your dad can't make it that's ok we still want you to be there.
